Policy points

The Victoria Regional Riding Association does not create policies, they rely on policies developed and communicated by the BC Greens. This page outlines the policy talking points that have been developed and shared by the BC Greens. The Victoria RRA uses these talking points to engage with voters. The policies are subject to change at any time, so before speaking with voters make sure that this page is up to date by checking when the last edit on this page was made (at the bottom of the page), or by confirming that the sources that are referenced at the bottom of the article are still active.

Talking to voters about policy

The BC Green party recommends that volunteers read the entirety of this page before speaking with voters. If policy questions get too high level, don’t be afraid to ask for contact info so a member of the team can follow up.

Volunteers should speak authentically about the values and policies that matter to them, and connect with voters by sharing each other’s “why”. The most important role of a volunteer is to listen—to understand what matters most to the voter. Volunteers will:

• Record what the voter shares about their priorities and concerns
• With the voter's consent, collect their contact information so the Candidate can personally follow up on the issues they care about.

Affordability

Quick policy point

Tax mega-corporations and the ultra-wealthy to fund an affordability agenda: affordable, social housing, publicly-run grocery stores, fast, free transit, and universal childcare.

Specific details

Frame	Life is getting less affordable while billionaires and mega-corporations get richer. We’re focused on fixing the root problem: a system that values wealth hoarding over everyday people.
Solutions	Tax extreme wealth and reinvest in public services to deliver cost-of-living relief Affordable, publicly owned housing Fast, free transit Universal childcare Publicly owned grocery stores Raise the social assistance and disability rates above the poverty line and stop the clawbacks.
Problem	The 1%’s wealth hoarding is the reason we can’t afford gas, groceries, or rent. The BC NDP is captured by corporate interests and props up this rigged economy. The Conservatives want to give handouts to corporations and the 1% and cut the programs that make life more affordable for working people.
Value	We live in one of the wealthiest provinces in one of the wealthiest nations in the world. We can afford to give everyone dignified lives.

Economy

Quick policy point

Take back our economy for working people by investing in projects like community-owned renewables and green tech, making it easier to join and form a union, and reducing reliance on American markets.

Frame	Our economy is captured by the billionaire-class and mega-corporations. The BC Greens are fighting to take back our economy for working people. When working people do well, our economy does well.
Solutions	Invest in long-term economic prosperity. Build a community-owned renewable grid and invest in good, green jobs to deliver an efficient, sustainable province. Stabilize industries like forestry and fishing for long-term success. Fund a care economy that serves working families. Reduce dependence on unstable markets controlled by the US, like oil and gas, and end handouts to fossil fuel corporations. Give workers more power in their workplace by making unionization accessible and incentivizing worker co-ops.
Problem	Mega-corporations hollow out communities and give little back. The BC NDP subsidizes dying industries at the behest of lobbyists  instead of providing real alternatives. The Conservatives would rather let corporations steal BC’s wealth than give working people a better future.
Value	Workers deserve an economy that puts them over the 1%.

Housing

Quick policy point

Build affordable, publicly-owned homes, protect renters’ rights, and make it easier and quicker to get housing built.

Frame	Housing is being treated as a commodity, not a human right. People are being forced to choose between rent and groceries: our housing system is broken.
Solutions	Build 26,000 affordable, publicly owned housing units annually. Strengthen renter protections and introduce vacancy control. Crack down on corporate speculation. Make it easier and quicker to build homes with zoning and tax reform.
Problem	Corporate real estate investors profit off of our suffering. The BC NDP are pretending the problem is fixing itself while defunding affordable housing initiatives. The Conservatives care more about investors making a profit than you ever owning a home
Value	Everyone deserves a safe, affordable home.

Healthcare

Quick policy point

Put Community Health Centres in every region, put mental health under MSP, and stop privatization so no one falls through the cracks.

Frame	Our system is collapsing: ER closures, no family doctors, and mental health out of reach. Care is becoming profit-driven and privatized — that’s unacceptable.
Solutions	Put a health centre in every community for accessible, comprehensive primary care. Cover mental health as part of our public system. Focus on prevention and wellness, not just crisis response.
Problem	The BC NDP is focused on band-aid solutions like pushing a dependency on emergency rooms and private nursing contracts. The Conservatives want to defund and privatize our public system.
Value	Everyone should get care when they need it — not wait months or go broke.

Democracy

Quick policy point

End the winner-takes-all system. Make every vote count with proportional representation (10% of the vote = 10% of the seats).

Specific details

Analytical framework	Policy point
Frame	Government trust and transparency is at an all time low. Real democracy means knowing what our elected officials are doing.
Solutions	Enact Proportional Representation, where a party’s share of seats at the Legislature is equal to their share of the vote. Ban corporate fossil fuel lobbying and make transparency for working people central to governance.
Problem	The BC NDP weakened transparency laws to keep working people out of the Legislature. The Conservatives want to throw open the doors of the legislature to the billionaire-class and mega-corporations.
Value	The Legislature belongs to working people  — our voice should matter.

Human Rights

Quick policy point

Stand up for the vulnerable, like protecting trans youth and ending BC’s complicity in global human rights violations, not just when it’s easy.

Frame	Politicians and the 1% want working people fighting amongst each other so they don’t look up at the people actually making life harder: the billionaire-class.
Solutions	Stand up for vulnerable groups, not just when it’s easy. Stand firm in our values, like supporting trans youth and ending BC’s complicity in global human rights violations.
Problem	The billionaire-class props up culture wars to avoid accountability. The BC NDP capitulates to Conservative culture wars at every turn. The Conservatives fuel the fire of hatred to avoid giving working people real solutions.
Value	Our rights are intertwined — an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us.

Climate

Quick policy point

Protect our most valuable resources and build an economy based on long-term prosperity, not on resource markets that the US controls.

Specific details

Analytical framework	Policy point
Frame	Every year, working families face wildfires, floods, and droughts, and our government is empowering the corporations who make it worse. When our climate thrives, so does our economy and our wellbeing.
Solutions	Stop tying our economy to dying industries controlled by the US, like fossil fuels. Stop logging of old growth, and ensure our forestry sector can last long-term. Build a community-owned renewable grid and invest in good, green jobs. Protect local farms and watersheds for food and water security.
Problem	Foreign fossil fuel corporations use our province as a profit extractor, and leave communities devastated when their resources dry up. The BC NDP says the right things, then backs foreign fossil fuel corporations with billions in public funding. The Conservatives pretend the problem doesn’t even exist.
Value	A province where working people and our environment thrives.

Toxic Drug Crisis

Quick policy point

Support full treatment and wraparound care, and implement harm reduction — lead with compassion, not punishment.

Specific details

Analytical framework	Policy point
Frame	This is BC’s deadliest public health crisis, we can’t keep doing the same things and hoping it will get better.
Solutions	Invest in treatment and recovery that’s based on voluntary care, not punishment Expand harm reduction, with regulated alternatives and safe consumption sites. Build wraparound support, including housing, mental health, employment, and more.
Problem	The BC NDP implemented half-measures then abandoned people who use drugs after Conservative pressure. The Conservatives push punishment and the failed war on drugs, which helps no one.
Value	You can’t recover from addiction if you’re dead. We need to have basic support in place so people can start to get on their feet and recover.

Reconciliation

Quick policy point

Build a path of transparency and prosperity through legal reform, Indigenous-led investment, and shared environmental stewardship.

Specific details

Analytical framework	Policy point
Frame	Reconciliation is about ensuring every British Columbian has a seat at the table, and that we can chart a path of transparency and prosperity, together. Co-governance in climate and land stewardship
Solutions	Legal reform and transparent negotiations with Indigenous nations to end the system of government-caused court battles. Indigenous-led housing, health, and economic development
Problem	The BC NDP are complicit in misinformation about DRIPA. They have abandoned Indigenous rights to chase Conservative voters. The Conservatives fearmonger about Indigenous rights, and are using them as a testing ground for repealing all of our rights.
Value	When they come for the rights of Indigenous peoples, all of our rights are on the table. That’s why we need to work together.
