Getting started
Welcome to the wiki for the Victoria Regional Riding Association. This wiki was created because members of the executive team felt that there was missing knowledge between previous iterations of Victoria Regional Riding Association's[1], and we wanted a place where we could share and collaborate on building a collective knowledge base.
However, this wiki is currently just a test. If it does not accomplish our goal of sharing knowledge and organising for the BC Greens (and accomplishing the goals described in the Victoria RRA Agreement) then we will stop using it. Because this wiki is a test, don't be afraid to edit pages, provide feedback in our communication channels, and ask questions. We are all learning together!
What is a wiki?
[edit | edit source]A wiki is a form of publication on the internet which is collaboratively edited and managed by its audience directly through a web browser. Anyone can contribute to this wiki by using the edit button to change each pages content.
This wiki is powered using MediaWiki. MediaWiki is a software that is used by tens of thousands of websites and thousands of organisations including Wikipedia. MediaWiki is free, open, and time tested. It is an alternative to privately owned software from companies like Google or Microsoft, and therefore more aligned with the values of the Green Party of BC and it's campaign to "Fight the Oligarchs".[2]
How can this wiki can help achieve the Victoria RRA goals?
[edit | edit source]The Victoria RRA Agreement outlines a number of goals that we aim to pursue over the coming year. Below is a table that outlines these goals and describes how a wiki might help in the pursuit of some of these goals.
| Goal outlined in the Victoria RRA Agreement | How this wiki might help |
|---|---|
| Recruiting, Managing, and Engaging Volunteers | We can direct volunteers to this wiki for information and training resources. |
| Fostering a Green Community | Reading and editing pages on this wiki is a collaborative process. It can help folks feel more in tune with our RRA's collective effort to organise. |
| Community Outreach and Involvement | If a volunteer wants to organise an event or reach out to new supporters, they can use this wiki to see what has happened before, who was involved and what resources were used. |
| Advocating on Topics of Local Importance | Volunteers can add pages and information on topics that are important to them. |
Reading this wiki
[edit | edit source]Searching
[edit | edit source]The quickest way to find information in this wiki is to look it up directly. On every page there is a search box.
Enter keywords and phrases and press Enter or Return or click the magnifying glass icon. If a page has the same title as what you entered, you jump straight to that page. Otherwise, it searches all pages on the wiki (with some restrictions), and presents a list of articles that matched your search terms, or a message informing you that no page has all the key words and phrases.
Navigation
[edit | edit source]Every page on this site not only has information to show you but also allows you to move to other pages. This is called "navigation". To help you navigate, every page has three main navigation elements:
- The sidebar gives you access to important pages in the wiki such as recent changes or upload file. This site requires you to log in before seeing all of the sidebar options, however sign in is not required.
- Tabs which relate to the page currently displayed: its associated discussion page (we are currently not using the discussion pages), the version history, and – most notably – the edit link.
- User links; as an anonymous user, you'll see a link to create an account or log in. As a logged-in user you have a collection of personal links, including ones to your user page and preferences.
